Welcome To Our Historical Village
Historical Museum
Our Historical Museum was built on site in 1984. These exhibits provide visitors a chance to walk back in time to the early pioneer days of Rimbey. You can learn about the settlers who started our town and the history of the Blindman Valley area!
Arch Rib Museum
Our Arch Rib Museum was built on-site in 1970. The arch rib design is reminiscent of early lightweight Quonset-style buildings. Construction was completed entirely by volunteers and all materials were donated. The feature exhibits highlight some of the trades of Rimbey and household appliances & equipment!
Military Museum
This building was built in 1952 in Bluffton and used as the Legion Hall. It was purchased by the Rimbey Historical Society and moved to our grounds in 1986. The exhibits within are a tribute to our veterans and the camaraderie of those who fought to help shape our country.
Barber Shop
Built-in 1915 on main street Rimbey, this building housed a barber shop in the front room and the Spinks family living quarters in the back. Tom Spinks was the barber and the shop was an entertaining place to go. In addition to a good haircut and hearing a story or two, you would often catch a tune from Tom playing his fiddle!
"A" Frame Museum
This "A" Frame building built in 1975, was Rimbey's Visitor Information Centre. You would see little buildings such as this all over Alberta and know where you could stop to find your tourist information.
**Currently, this building's exhibits are being revised and redesigned to host a memory lane of the Rimbey area!
Medical Museum
Our Medical Museum was built on site in 2012. The Rimbey Auxiliary Hospital donated a number of items when it went through renovations, many of the instruments which are on display and an operating table. The Rimbey Gas Plant donated its 1961 ambulance and the family of Dr. Leboldus donated an extensive collection of dentistry equipment.
The Steeves House
Built in the early 1900s, this building was a store and post office for Hoadley. It is unique in design and built of rough-hewn logs that are put together by wooden pegs. The log home was donated to us in 2015 by the Steeves family, along with all the artifacts and the stories posted on the walls. One of the Steeves daughters is famed author Janette Oke, whose writing exhibit is in our Smithson International Truck Museum!
Historical Tractor Museum
Our Tractor Museum was built on site in 2009. Home to a variety of vintage tractors donated by local farmers, some of which have been restored through many hours of volunteer help. It contains 20 tractors, 10 plows, 3 large stationary engines and so much more!
Train Station & Caboose
The caboose was built in 1947 and moved to the Museum in 1992. The Canadian Pacific Rail donated the Caboose in cooperation with Gulf Canada. The railway had stretched as far as Bentley in November of 1917 but was not extended to Rimbey until 1921. Rimbey's train station no longer exists, so this building was bought at auction in Tees in 1979.
Blacksmith Shop
Blacksmith Gustav Weber ran the shop in Rimbey from 1944-1975. The original building was not sturdy enough to be moved so this replica was built in the early 1980s and an addition was added in 2017 to better display the artifacts which have been donated over the years!
Kansas Ridge School
Rimbey's first official school, built before the town was given its present name, was erected in 1902. The schoolhouse was in use until 1924, when a much larger brick school building was constructed, the stone sign in front of the schoolhouse is all that remains of the brick building. The school building was brought to us and restored by students and teachers of Rimbey School as a Centennial project in 1967.
Town Office
This building has a varied history, sometime in the early years of Rimbey, it was built to be a private residence. In 1915 it was turned into a high school by Mrs. W.S. Mellis who ran it for 5 years, after which the building was used as a town office. The building was used until 1965 when the town office was moved into the town's old post office building.
Anglican Church of the Epiphany
Built in 1908, the Anglican Church of the Epiphany was the first church building to be erected in Rimbey. Ben Rimbey, a carpenter who also acted as the foreman for its construction, donated the land for the church. He was not Anglican, but people of all faiths volunteered their time to get the church built. The first service was held on December 20, 1908!
Homesteader's Cottage
The majority of this building was built by hand in 1932 by Felix Edlund, a Swedish miner who homesteaded near Hoadley. However, Edlund abandoned the building when it was nearly finished, lacking windows and doors. The Kramer family bought the land and donated the building to us in the 1970s. We put on the finishing touches and turned the inside into an early settler's home!
Trapper's Cabin
This tiny log cabin was built in 2001 to re-create a trapper's cabin used by a Russian couple who lived in the area in the 1920s. This cabin is slightly larger than the original to accommodate visitors comfortably.
